Skillstreaming in Early Childhood

Provides a systematic group training programme for teaching prosocial skills to young children, especially those who exhibit withdrawal, aggression, behaviour problems or learning disabilities.  It is designed to help kids increase self-esteem, develop competence in dealing with interpersonal conflicts and contribute to a positive classroom atmosphere.  The approach utilises teacher modelling, student role playing, group performance feedback and transfer training.  The book provides strategies for teaching 40 specific prosocial skills and is divided into 6 skill groups: Beginning Social Skills, School-Related Skills, Friendship-making Skills, Dealing with Feelings, Alternatives to Aggression, Dealing with Stress.  It also includes a number of useful assessment measures and forms to identify children most in need of training; assess their strengths and weaknesses, assign them to groups and evaluate progress as well as a variety of management techniques to deal with typical problem behaviours encountered during group sessions.
