One of the causes of reading comprehension problems is a neuropsychological problem in creating imaged gestalts to connect to and interpret language.  A significant number of students only grasp or connect to “parts” of the language they read or the language they hear.  They must read and reread material many times.  They may recall a few details but cannot generalise and create a “whole” from incoming language.  This inability to process a whole stems from a corollary inability to form imaged gestalts.  Without the gestalt from which to process, they are unable to interpret and reason with language.  This is called concept imagery dysfunction.  Many students have this language  comprehension disorder and are frequently diagnosed as “not motivated”.  They may have:  weak reading comprehension - they have to read and reread material several times and still frequently remember only a few details rather than the
“whole”. Higher order  comprehension skills such as main idea, inference, conclusions are not possible:  weak oral comprehension -they connect only to part of a conversation and have difficulty responding relevantly and thinking logically.  They may ask and re-ask the same question and are labelled as “poor listeners”:  weak oral language expression - they may be shy and have difficulty organising their verbalisation or they may be talkative but scattered, relating information out of sequence: weak written language expression - their writing is not organised and specific.  They don’t respond to the main idea of the question or the topic; weak sense of humour; weakness in following directions;difficulty with “cause and effect”. The Visualising/Verbalising programme successfully develops concept imagery and language comprehension. The specific steps are:   picture to picture; word imagery; sentence by sentence imagery - including a “picture summary” and a “word summary”; paragraph imaging; page imaging; chapter interpretation This book, Visualising and Verbalising, identifies the important sensory connection that imagery provides and teaches specific techniques.
