York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension

The Primary edition consists of the following components:

The Secondary edition will be published in mid-2010 and is likely to differ from the Primary edition in terms of content, structure and administration.  The age range is 12 to 16.  It will be part of the same suite of tests with overlap so that some of the Primary material is available for use with the 12+ age range.

There are two passages of equivalent difficulty for years Preschool to 6th Class allowing pupils to be   assessed at two points during the school year
Pupils can progress through the passages according to performance
Passages yield a rate of reading as well as error analysis based on mispronunciation, substitution, refusals, additions, omissions and reversals

YARC has been correlated with NARA so that customers can move from NARA to YARC and maintain progress tracking across the two tests
Assessment time is expected to be five to 10 minutes for the younger pupils and up to 15 minutes with 10 and 11 year olds
The Manuals will contain all the usual technical information as well as case studies (for dyslexia, ADHD and SpLD) and recommendations for what to do post-testing
YARC yields standard age score and reading ages for comprehension, rate and accuracy

YARC is a brand new, individual reading assessment for four to 11 year olds developed by reading experts at the University of York

Key Selling Points:

(a) The tests will enable teachers to monitor progress, e.g. at the beginning or end of term, or after a new unit of work.

(b) There are 3 tests for each of the 5 ‘blocks’, so that progress in each block can be monitored across the year. The tests are differentiated, enabling teachers to monitor progress and respond to different pupil
