Measuring Success in Maths Mental and Written Tests for Years 1—6 Alan Edmiston & Jenny Lawson A new series of photocopioble Mental and Written Maths tests for ages 5—11, to use regularly throughout the school year. These tests will help teachers check their pupils’ understanding and identify their needs as they go through the relevant topics. Key Selling Points: (a) The tests will enable teachers to monitor progress, e.g. at the beginning or end of term, or after a new unit of work. (b) There are 3 tests for each of the 5 ‘blocks’, so that progress in each block can be monitored across the year. The tests are differentiated, enabling teachers to monitor progress and respond to different pupil ability. (c) Age 5-6 comprises mostly small group Tasks to be observed by the teacher, building up to Mental and Written tests as pupils move through the year. Age 6 comprises three Tasks and three Mental and Written tests for each block. (d) Ages 7—11 comprise three Mental and Written tests per block. (e) Structured around the QCA Framework for Maths (for England), but these topic areas are thematic, so are likely to be relevant elsewhere. (f) Users can download a spreadsheet converting the raw tests scores into National Curriculum levels. Foreign publishers could fallow a similar conversion approach if relevant, substituting their awn curriculum information.
