Step 1 Students in Transition Year Complete the Occupational Interests Index Booklet during a normal class period; add up their scores for each of 15 Occupational Categories and transfer them onto the Occupational Interests Index Chart.
Step 2 They complete the 3 Aptitude Indices in another class period. they add up their scores for the Verbal, Numerical, Abstract Aptitude Indices and the total score for all three - which is the Career Fit Index - and transfer them to the Aptitudes Indices Chart supplied with the Indices.
Step 3 the two charts are then sent to ETC Consult for Interpretation.
Step 4 ETC Consult sends back for each student. A list of 10 careers - in order of preference - that he or she is most likely to enjoy and be competent at. A list of 10 FETAC, PLC or CAO Level 6 courses that lead directly or indirectly into such careers.
How with Career Fit Benefit Students and Adult? The outcomes - represented on the two charts referred to above - will show to them objectively that they have the abilities and the interests to get them into a wide range of careers. It will help to raise their self-esteem and give them the motivation and the confidence to take on more responsibility for their own development.
How will Career Fit benefit Career Guidance Counsellors? Their students will be more positive, motivated, interested and co-operative as a result of completing the series and getting positive feedback which will give them realistic occupational goals to aim for in life. Relationships between Counsellors and previously disengaged students will be significantly enhanced.
